WELCOME AND THANK YOU FOR VISITING

I built this site for several reasons, though the first is what got it started: to give people who are interested a place to find and read my book, Resurrecting Abel: Before Words and After Words. It’s not a page turner; difficult in places. But I hope you will read more than a few chapters.

The photograph beneath the title is not decoration. It is the proposition of the book. A child's hand grips an adult's finger, not out of need but as a natural reflex, the kind of grasp that happens before thought, before words, simply because it is what a hand does when something is offered. The adult, in turn, is not holding the child. He is offering just enough for connection, no more, no less, a small and measured gesture that makes the grip possible without controlling it. That is the whole book in a single image. The child's grip is the immersive: unwilled, complete in itself. The adult's offered finger is the reflective: intentional, aware of what it is doing even as it does it. Neither is superior. The photograph works because both are present at once, each doing what the other cannot.

The second reason came later, and it matters just as much. I wanted to leave my children and the people closest to me a repository of my thoughts, political, psychological, spiritual, serious, and often not so serious. Words outlast conversation. I want them to know who I was, at least in part, through what I wrote, not only through what they remember of me.

The third reason came from other people, not from me. Several friends and readers had followed two newsletters I wrote over the years, The NoBull Newsletter and In the Zone, and more than a few told me the writing had actually helped them and urged me to gather it in one place rather than let it sit scattered in old emails. This site is where that collection now lives.

A word about how to take all of this. I spent a career listening closely and thinking hard about what makes people tick, and I believe some of what follows is worth your time. But I am not writing to you as an expert delivering conclusions. I am writing as one more person trying to make sense of this world, same as you, who happened to spend a few decades getting paid to pay close attention while he did it. Read these words with a grain of salt and, wherever you can manage it, a grin. Because being human is a very peculiar business.
